Active Workload Manager - AWM
AWM is a rules-based, autonomous interventional monitoring tool that allows fully automated management of the critical resources consumed by the data warehouse user community.
Building on the introduction of Ward Analytic’s powerful real-time Active capability through an easy to use 5 step “expression-builder” Forms interface, AWM Users can create rules for End Users, Groups of Users (based on individual usernames, Priority Scheduler Performance Groups or Roles), that ensure whenever the relevant criteria are met, the chosen action(s) are executed.
Expressions used to build the rules cover a wide of criteria, as do the resultant actions; thus a single User/Role/Performance Group/Group of Users etc. taking too much resource at the wrong time are automatically dealt with by any action ranging from “Do Nothing” through “Send Email” to Session or Query termination or even Account Suspension. Notification via chosen mechanisms to the relevant Supervisory staff or other interested parties is fully automated, as is full logging of any rule conditions being triggered and resultant actions and notifications.
A “safe” mode is incorporated to allow rules to be set but not activated - allowing the user to assess the veracity of the rules and thus the depth to which AWM is utilized – this mode is particularly effective in non-intrusive evaluation scenarios, where a clear assessment of workload management outcomes is desired without the actions/interventions actually taking place.
When rules are triggered, the SQL that was running and the Explain Step reached at the time the rule was triggered are automatically captured to the AWM log for further analysis. A simple “cut and paste” operation allows the SQL to be passed to Prism for further detailed analysis.
